Home Centred Cookies.. the best recipe ever!

As a mother of four children, one of the tasks I am constantly engaged in is cooking and feeding my family. This begins at breakfast time and goes all day until dinner. Of course, like most families we have our favourite 'go-to' meals and snacks. Today I would like to share with you my most requested recipes of all time. I've been making this for years and it's not only a family favourite but also friends and even strangers at events have asked me for the recipe. Recently a friend was interstate on the first day of school for her boys. I knew they loved my cookies so I made them a batch. I take them to barbecues and social events, on road trips and I've even wrapped them up for Christmas gifts. They are always a crowd favourite.

There are many adaptations you can make but here it is:

One of the adaptations you can make is to cut out the cocoa but you may need to add more flour. You can also add pecans or walnuts too. I've done that and it give the cookies some crunch. I also make sure I take the cookies out of the oven when they are still soft. Let them cool on a rack and they will harden up.

In case you don't know the history of the chocolate chip cookie, sometimes known as Toll House cookies, here it is:

One thing we learn about these simple yet delicious cookies is that the baking chips used in them maintain their shape. The message here:

The most popular cookie of all time came about all because a bit of chocolate held its ground and didn’t melt when the heat was on.

I've been reading a book by Dr Justin Coulson about resilience. Although specifically for parents, about children, Dr Coulson does explain that the principles in the book are valuable for people of any age. Perhaps I'll do a deep dive in another blog but just for now, whenever you are eating a chocolate chip cookie, pause and think about those chocolate chips. Not only are they delicious but they remind us that when the heat is on, when things are getting hard, remember what you stand for so you don't melt under heat. Like my mum always says, "Remember who you are". This sense of self, sense of identity, knowing who you are, is also a feature of resilience, according to Dr Coulson.

I'd love to hear what you think of these chocolate chip cookies. I don't mind the dough myself and neither do the kids! You can reach out to me at home-centred@outlook.com or on our socials. Thanks for taking the time to be home centred.
